This ruined fortification is also commonly known as York Castle. It was built shortly after the Norman invasion of 1066 in order to provide a stronghold from which the Viking city of York could be controlled. A valuable asset in the North for several centuries before gradually falling into a state of disrepair, Clifford’s Tower was for a long time used as a prison, before this eventually closed in 1929.
