South Queensferry, also just called Queensferry or ‘The Ferry’ is a town just outside of Edinburgh and close to the Edinburgh Airport. Around 9,000 people live in the town, and it hosts events such as the Ferry Fair and the Loony Dook. In 2012, during excavation work for a new road, archaeologists discovered the remains of a welling which dates back to 10,000 years ago. It is thought to be the earliest home discovered in Scotland, and possibly even the entire UK.
The Ferry Fair is a week-long event that takes place each August. The event culminates in the crowning of a local girl as the Ferry Fair Queen, and includes events such as the Burryman. The Burryman is literally a man covered from head to toe in burrs from the burdock plant, and he spends the day making his way through the town, being given drinks and collecting money.
The Loony Dook usually happens on New Year’s Day, and is an event where people dress up and dive into the Firth of Forth as part of Hogmanay celebrations. There’s a cash prize for the best costume, and a portion of each ticket is donated to charity. Each year, the event draws around 1,000 swimmers and plenty more spectators.
