Located in Linlithgow, around 15 miles from Edinburgh, Linlithgow Palace is the famous birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. The Palace is now a ruin after being burnt in 1746, although it was a residence of Scotland’s monarchs throughout the 15th and 16th centuries.
Linlithgow Palace is not the first building to sit on the site. In the 12th century, it was home to a royal manor, and after that was pulled down a fortification was built in the 14th century. This fortification, known as ‘the Peel’ was occupied by the English until it was retaken by the Scottish and dismantled.
King James I rebuilt the Church of St Michael after Linlithgow was partly destroyed by a fire in 1424. The Church of St Michael is next to Linlithgow Palace, and in the following years, the palace was built and added to.
When you are visiting Linlithgow Palace keep an eye out for the 4 European orders James V had carved into the arch above the entrance gate. These were orders of chivalry and are notable for their colourful engravings.
The medieval palace is now administered by Historic Environment Scotland and is open to visitors all year. It is a popular place to visit, particularly in summer when the adjacent Church of St Michael is also open to the public.
In recent times Linlithgow Palace has been the host to a music festival ‘Party at the Palace’, appeared in television series and been the site of a fashion show for Chanel. Its location on Linlithgow Loch makes it a popular place to admire the view.
