Sherborne is a small town of around 10,000 people in the area of Dorset, about an hour’s drive south of Bath. Sherborne Abbey is located on Abbey Close in the centre of town, and parts of it date as far back as around 1050, although most of the cathedral was rebuilt in around the 14th century.
The Abbey is famous for its fan vaulting, which was added in around 1490. The award-winning English journalist Simon Jenkins said in the book England’s Thousand Best Churches: “I would pit Sherborne’s roof against any contemporary work of the Italian Renaissance.”
St Katherine’s Chapel is home to most of the Abbey’s surviving medieval glass, and the Lady Chapel is home to a chandelier which dates back to 1657 and could be the oldest in England. The north choir aisle contains two tombs which are thought to belong to King Æthelbald of Wessex and King Æthelberht of Wessex, the elder brothers of Alfred the Great.
Sherborne Abbey is open to visit 365 days a year, and is completely free to visit, although donations are much appreciated. Between April and October, there are also free guided tours every Tuesday morning at 10:30am, and Friday afternoons at 2:30pm. You can also book tours for groups throughout the year at a cost of £4 per person. You can also buy a colour guidebook of the Abbey just inside the main entrance, and there are free leaflets which provide information about the building.
