Wells Cathedral is a Grade I listed building located in the centre of Wells; a small town of around 12,000 people about 45 minutes from Bath and Bristol. Construction began on the cathedral in 1175, and today almost 300 of the original 400 medieval statues remain on the West Front.
The Cathedral is open from Monday to Saturday from 9:15am to 4pm, and on Sundays from 12pm to 2pm, then from 4:30pm to 6pm. There are free daily guided tours of the cathedral, and free weekly walks on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from April to October. The 10.40am walk looks at the stone carvings of the cathedral, the 11.10am takes you to see the stained glass, and the 11.40am walk takes you through the 32 banners at the cathedral. There are also a special interest tour, a high parts tour, and a chained library tour.
The library was built in the 15th century and holds over 4000 books. All of the books in the chained library were printed before 1800, with the earliest being a Pliny Naturalis Historiae by Nicholas Jenson which was printed in Venice in 1472. The reading room opened in 2002 and allows access to the books in the collection that were printed after 1800.
