Salisbury Cathedral is located in the heart of Salisbury, a cathedral city home to over 40,000 people. Construction on the main body of the cathedral began in 1220 and was completed in 1258. Construction continued for many years until the tower and spire were finished in 1320. Standing at 123 metres tall, the spire of the Salisbury Cathedral became the tallest church spire in the country in 1549 after the largest spire on the Lincoln Cathedral was destroyed.
The Salisbury Cathedral is home to one of the original copies of the Magna Carta. It also has a clock dating back to 1386, supposedly making it the oldest working modern clock in the world. Salisbury is also just a 20-minute drive from Stonehenge, a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Salisbury Cathedral offers tours of the stonemasonry works yard for £17.50 per person, and tours of the tower for £13.50 per person. There are also free tours of the stained glass each Monday at midday. Please note that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all tours have been suspended until further notice.
