Arthur’s Seat is an extinct volcano and the grandest peak of the three clusters of hills in Scotland’s capital Edinburgh. It forms the majority of the Holyrood Park alongside Calton Hill and Castle Rock, all of which are a site of special scientific interest. Lying just a mile east of the famed Edinburgh Castle, built on top of an extinct volcano, the hill rises high over the city of 822 feet and gives breath-taking 360 views over the city and beyond. It has been said to bear similarity to a sleeping lion.
It is a popular hillwalking and climbing attraction, with the ability to climb the hill from any direction, dependent on how hard a hike you want to endure.
In 1836 five boys who were hunting for rabbits found 17 miniature coffins each with tiny wooden figures inside, in a cave on the peaks of Arthur’s Seat. Though there were suggestions the coffins were made for witchcraft or linked to the Burke and Hare 1828 murders, the purpose of those 17 coffins remains a mystery even to this day. This became a subject of the Phillip Caveney teen fiction novel ‘Seventeen Coffins’ published in 2014 about the unexplained find.
