Ripon is a cathedral city of around 17,000 people in North Yorkshire. The town dates back to the 7th century and is home to the Ripon Cathedral. It was founded in 672, and the crypt is the oldest of any British cathedral. Prayer has taken place here for almost 1350 years, and the cathedral still hosts daily and weekly services. It was voted the Best Small Racecourse in the North by the Racegoers Club in 2011, 2014 and 2015. Ripon is home to the watch setting ceremony, which has taken place every night at 9pm for 1100 years. The wakeman, who was initially appointed to watch over the town at night, has to set his watch at the market cross, and then announce to the mayor that he has done so. This ceremony hasn’t been missed, not even once, since it began.
