Saltaire is a historic market village in the town of Shipley in West Yorkshire. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
The town was named after Sir Titus Salt who built a textile mill (the Salts Mill) along the River Aire in 1853. The village was built to house workers for the mill, which had around 3000 workers at its peak. It was capable of producing 18 miles of worsted cloth a day on 1200 looms. The construction of the village wasn’t finished until 1876, and it was completely self-sufficient with shops, a hospital, school, library, park and church. Sir Titus Salt was buried at United Reformed Church on Victoria Road, and more than 100,000 people attended his funeral.
