Nearby Attractions
Bratton Camp is the site of Iron Age hillfort defences that date back over 2000 years. It is also home to the iconic White Horse. The horse is cut into the side of the hill, and is thought to have originally been cut into the chalk around the late 1600s. It was probably created to commemorate the Battle of Ethandun which took place here in 878. The horse used to have to be scoured regularly to keep it white, but it was covered in white concrete in the 1950s to preserve it. The last recorded scouring happened in 1853.
