Selby is a town in North Yorkshire, about 40 minutes’ drive from Leeds. The town is home to about 15,000 people, and first appears in history as a settlement called Seletun in 779. It is thought to be the birthplace of King Henry I, and it is where you can find Selby Abbey, which was built in 1069 and is one of the biggest surviving abbey churches. The Abbey was given Grade I listed status in 1952, and celebrated 950 years since it was founded in 2019. To celebrate, Selby hosted the Selby 950, which included a huge variety of events including a bell peal, a living history day, live music, a pop-up opera, exhibitions, a parade, and a light festival.
Selby hosts a range of events throughout the year. Towerfest is an open-air music festival spread over a number of days, and has been called north England's premier open-air country music festival. The Selby Food & Drink Festival offers a ton of food stalls and demonstrations by professional chefs, as well as live music and entertainment. Selby also has a Christmas market with over 40 stalls, crafts and gifts, food and drink, as well as performances by local choirs and bands. Selby Abbey is a beautiful and historic part of the town. Built in 1069, it has survived almost 1000 years and is still open to visitors to this day. One of its most famous features is the original 14th century Washington Window. It contains the Washington family coat of arms, which was the model for the American flag. You can visit the Abbey from 10am to 3pm each day, and you can attend weekly reflection, bible readings and prayers on Sundays. The Abbey also hosts weddings, baptisms and funerals.
The Selby Railway Swing Bridge was built in 1889, and is another local favourite. A stretch of the bridge has a moveable span of about 40 metres, which allows boats to pass by underneath. Otherwise, it is part of the railway line and lies just north of the Selby Railway Station. It has been recently refurbished to fix an issue with rails not aligning properly when the bridge was closed.
