Waterlooville is a precious market town in the Havant district, in the Hampshire region of England and lies around only 8 miles north of the city of Portsmouth. The town is believed to have stemmed from a pub which used to stand in the centre of the village. On its opening in 1815, soldiers came ashore at Portsmouth on return from the Battle of Waterloo, stopped there to commemorate their victory. It was therefore named Heroes of Waterloo in their honour. The area surrounding the pub became known as Waterloo and then in order to distinguish the town from other places, it became Waterlooville.
The mid-19th century saw Waterlooville still a very small village, with a population of less than 200 people. The golf course which is central to Waterlooville was established in 1907 when a group of gentlemen intended to form a golf club in the area. The growth of Waterloo began in the 1950s when an influx of people arrived from West and North of England. Between 1958 and 1971 the town saw a staggering 9,000 private houses built, Waterlooville grew more rapidly than any other town in Britain during that time.
The town sits close to the A3 which runs directly into London from Portsmouth. It has close links to ferries from Portsmouth and commuter trains into London from either Portsmouth or Bedhampton.
