St Woolos Hospital (known as Ysbyty Sant Gwynllyw in Welsh) is named after St Gwynllyw, the fifth-century Welsh king, warlord and religious figure who founded the City of Newport. The hospital started as a workhouse for the poor in 1837, and was converted into a military hospital for wounded soldiers after the outbreak of the First World War. It is now primarily a mental health hospital, and has wards for stroke rehabilitation, orthopaedic rehabilitation and dermatology.
