Jesmond Dene is a park located in Newcastle upon Tyne on the side of the river Ouseburn. It is open to the public and includes a popular petting zoo and plenty of walks for various fitness levels. Jesmond Dene is also easily accessible from Newcastle upon Tyne.
Jesmond Dene is now owned by the Newcastle City Council, but was first established as a park in the 1860s by Lord Armstrong and his wife. Although their house has been demolished, there are plenty of other sites within Jesmond Dene that are popular attractions.
The Waterfall is one of Jesmond Dene’s more famous attractions. It’s a lovely spot to explore near the northern playing field, and was made by blasting the river bed at the request of Lord Armstrong. Keep an eye out for the ruins of the mill along the Ouseburn river near the Waterfall. This 14th century mill was used to grind corn for nearby farms and as a flour mill.
You can continue to walk along the River Ouseburn in Jesmond Dene to what was Fisherman’s Lodge. This building has also been called Heaton Cottage and Deepdene House, and adjoined an old corn mill before the latter began to fall away.
Jesmond Dene’s most famous building is St Mary’s Chapel - the oldest church in Newcastle which dates back to the early 12th century. The ruins of this chapel are worth a visit, and they have been the site of a pilgrimage that continues to this day.
There is also plenty of nature out and about in Jesmond Dene, so keep an eye out for the many species of birds that call the valley home. There are guided walks available, or bird spotting sheets can be downloaded at the Friends of Jesmond Dene website.
