The Whitworth Art Gallery, also just known as The Whitworth, was founded in 1889 and saw a £15 million redevelopment in 2015. The gallery is surrounded by Whitworth Park, where you’ll find an art garden, sculpture terrace, and an orchard garden.
The Whitworth Art Gallery combines art with the outdoors in Whitworth Park. The Art Garden was designed by Chelsea gold medallist, Sarah Price, who also designed the 2012 Olympic Park meadows. The gallery hosts a range of free outdoor events, such as Welly Walks and messy play sessions for kids, as well as self-guided walking trails around the park. Out in the park, you’ll find works by Nathan Coley, Simon Periton, Emily Young, Gustav Metzger, Michael Lyons, Christine Borland, and Bernard Schottlander.
Inside the gallery, you’ll find a historic art collection which features works by William Blake, John Robert Cozens, William Turner, Paul Sandby, Thomas Gainsborough, Thomas Jones, Millais, Rossetti, Holman Hunt and Burne-Jones. The collection of Modern art contains work by Degas, Van Gogh, Pissarro, Gauguin, Sickert, Epstein, Wadsworth, Piper, Ben Nicholson, Winifred Nicholson, Hepworth and Moore.
