The Whitworth Art Gallery, also just known as The Whitworth, was founded in 1889 and saw a £15 million redevelopment in 2015. The gallery is surrounded by Whitworth Park, where you’ll find an art garden, sculpture terrace, and an orchard garden. 

The Whitworth Art Gallery combines art with the outdoors in Whitworth Park. The Art Garden was designed by Chelsea gold medallist, Sarah Price, who also designed the 2012 Olympic Park meadows. The gallery hosts a range of free outdoor events, such as Welly Walks and messy play sessions for kids, as well as self-guided walking trails around the park. Out in the park, you’ll find works by Nathan Coley, Simon Periton, Emily Young, Gustav Metzger, Michael Lyons, Christine Borland, and Bernard Schottlander. 

Inside the gallery, you’ll find a historic art collection which features works by William Blake, John Robert Cozens, William Turner, Paul Sandby, Thomas Gainsborough, Thomas Jones, Millais, Rossetti, Holman Hunt and Burne-Jones. The collection of Modern art contains work by Degas, Van Gogh, Pissarro, Gauguin, Sickert, Epstein, Wadsworth, Piper, Ben Nicholson, Winifred Nicholson, Hepworth and Moore.

There is a small amount of on-site Whitworth Art Gallery parking. There is disabled parking located on Denmark Road, as well as spaces if you’re just dropping someone off or picking them up.

These costs apply from 8am - 8pm on all days, except for bank holidays.

By Train: The Manchester Oxford Road train station is a 25-minute walk from the Whitworth Art Gallery and services 

By Bus: Several bus lines run by the Whitworth Art Gallery, including 15, 41, 42, 42A, 42B, 42C, 43, 111, 142, 143, 742 and 749.

By Car: The Whitworth Art Gallery is located on Oxford Roads, one of the main roads leading into and out of the city centre. 

If you’re looking for disabled parking near the Whitworth Art Gallery, you’ll find five disabled bays located on Denmark Road. There are also nine spaces for drop-off, and seven double yellow line areas, where blue badge holders can also park. 

Three of the disabled parking bays are right beside the park entrance on Denmark Road. The path is step-free and leads to the entrance to the gallery. The other two disabled parking bays are located a little further along the road, closer to the main entrance. There are ramps leading up to the automatic doors of the gallery. 

Blue badge holders are also entitled to free on-street parking throughout Manchester city centre.
