Parking in South Hampstead Station
Information about Parking in South Hampstead Station
South Hampstead is part of the London Borough of Camden in inner north-west London. Notable residents include Kylie Minogue, Barry Humphries and Natalie Imbruglia.
South Hampstead railway station is located on Loudoun Road, around 550 yards south-west of Swiss Cottage Underground station. It opened in 1879 and was originally named Loudoun Road station, after the road on which it is located. Its name was changed to South Hampstead station in 1922.
The original station building has been replaced, and a new footbridge constructed. Those into architecture or history can find traces of the removed station canopies and the older footbridge in the brickwork of the retaining walls on both sides of the line.
The station’s greatest claim to fame is that it was evocatively described by Sir John Betjeman in his 1952 essay First and Last Loves.
London is known for its high prices, but Hampstead prices are even higher than the London average, making it difficult to park in the area without spending a lot.

Disabled Parking
Because of the serious parking problems in central London, there are four London boroughs which do not have the same Blue Badge concessions as the rest of the country. These four boroughs are:
- The City of Westminster
- The City of London
- The Borough of Camden
- The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
In some central parts of the Borough of Camden, there are some limitations that apply on top of the usual Blue Badge parking restrictions. Blue Badge holders cannot park:
- On red routes, double yellow lines or single yellow lines
- In suspended parking bays
- In residents’ parking bays
- In personalised disabled bays
- In specific bays, for example, doctor or taxi bays
However, Blue Badge holders can park in Pay and Display bays, where they have one hour’s free parking after the time they have paid for has run out.
Disabled people who live, work or study in central areas of Camden can apply for a Green Badge. The Green Badge works alongside the Blue Badge and you must display both to be eligible for disabled parking the Borough of Camden.
