Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, built on the site of a huge workhouse, suffered many false starts before the beautiful building we see today was finally finished. One of these was the design of Sir Edwin Lutyens, whose vision was never fulfilled due to rising costs and the interruption of World War II, though the atmospheric Crypt was completed. However, a scale model of the Lutyens Cathedral, around four metres high and five metres long, was produced in 1929 and is now displayed in the Liverpool Museum.
