Honiton is a market town in East Devon, about half an hour’s drive from Exeter. It is home to around 12,000 people and became known for its lace during the Elizabethan era.
Honiton hosts the Hot Pennies Ceremony each year on the first Tuesday after July 19th. The festival dates back to the 13th century when Honiton was granted a Royal Charter. After midday, the Town Cryer carries a garlanded pole with a gloved hand and declares that “No man may be arrested so long as this glove is up.” This started as a way to encourage people to come to the ceremony without being worried about being arrested for their debt. The first pennies are thrown from the balcony of the former Assembly Rooms, and then again from the procession. It’s called the ‘hot pennies’ ceremony because the rich used to enjoy watching the peasants burning their fingers as they picked up the coins. Nowadays, the coins are just warm.

The All Hallows Museum of Honiton supposedly has the most comprehensive collections of Honiton Lace in the world. It has two galleries showing examples of lace dating as far back as the 17th century. The museum building itself is the oldest in Honiton, dating back to before 1327 when it was used as a chapel. It opened as a museum in 1946. In June, July, and August, volunteers demonstrate the process behind making Honiton lace. It’s a very intricate process, with one square centimetre of lace taking up to 5 hours to produce. Large pieces such as handkerchiefs could take up to 1,000 hours.
The town is surrounded by the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It covers over 260 square kilometres of countryside, and has walking and cycling trails throughout. You can also go horse riding, or take one of the group walks led by volunteers. The area is full of history, with spots like ancient burial grounds and the remains of Iron Age hillforts.
