Richmond is a market town in North Yorkshire, home to around 8,500 people. It sits about an hour’s drive north of Leeds, and about 20 minutes’ drive from Darlington on the east side of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The town was founded back in 1071, and it was where the famous author Lewis Carroll attended school.
In the town, you’ll find a number of historic buildings, including Richmond Castle (built in the late 1070s) and the Easby Abbey (founded in 1152). The town sits along the River Swale, and you can enjoy the picturesque River Swale Waterfalls just outside of town.
Richmond hosts a market each Saturday at the top of Market Place, and this market dates all the way back to 1903 when they were authorised by the Earls of Richmond. Here, you’ll find fresh fish, meat, cheese, fruit and vegetables, flowers, etc. There is also a Market Hall which is open 7 days a week and has a wide variety of things to sell every day.

Richmond Castle was built in the 1070s and is the best-preserved early Norman castle in England. During the Victorian era, it became the headquarters of the North York Militia, and during the First World War it was used by the Northern Non-Combatant Corps. During the Second World War, the roof of the castle was used to keep watch for enemy activity nearby, and prisoners were kept in the cell block.
The Easby Abbey was founded in 1152 and is one of the best-preserved monasteries of the Premonstratensian order in Britain. The parish church (St Agatha's) is still in use, and inside you can see the 13th-century wall paintings. There is a walking trail along the river which connects Easby Abbey and Richmond Castle, so they’re the perfect places to explore on a sunny day.
Market Place sits in the centre of town and hosts the town’s Saturday Market. There, you can buy fresh produce and meats, cheeses and flowers, plus other delicious food. Also worth checking out is the Richmond Obelisk which was built in 1771.

Who is the Little Drummer Boy?
It’s a popular town legend about a group of soldiers who discovered an opening to a tunnel under Richmond Castle. The soldiers were big to go inside, so they sent one of the regimental drummer boys into the tunnel. He was told to beat his drum as he explored so they could try and figure out where the tunnel went. They followed the sound of drums away from the Castle, across the Market Place, and then down beside the River Swale. Once they reached the Easby Wood, the drumming stopped, and the drummer boy was never seen again. No one has ever figured out what happened to him.
