Cleethorpes is a seaside town that sits on the Humber estuary on the east coast in North East Lincolnshire. The town, which joins with its bordering town of Grimsby, has some of the lowest yearly rainfall in the entire British Isles. The North East Lincolnshire Coast is also globally acclaimed as a unique location for wildlife, migrating birds, and strange plants.
The seaside town has been perpetually inhabited as far back as the 6th century, fishing being its initial production, before in the 19th century it grew into a seaside resort, when bathing in the sea became a fashionable pastime. Up until the 1960s the town flourished with tourists flocking there every year usually from the midlands and Yorkshire. Now the town sees more visitors on day trips due or caravanning.
Cleethorpes is lovingly nicknamed by the local residents of Lincolnshire and the Humber as ‘Meggies’ and ‘Down Beach’. The town also has the Greenwich Meridian pass through it, and a signpost with worldwide locations such as the North Pole, New York City, South Pole and London. Many visit to spend hours on the sandy beach and visit the Victorian pier, which first opened in 1873 for some fish and chips or walk along the promenade which opened in 1885.
