Located in Devon, Crediton is a town of around 8,000 in the South West of England. This historic town is around 7 miles from the much larger city of Exeter and has a strong agricultural and industrial economy.
As well as a few historic buildings, Crediton is home to an Arts Centre, community centre, a handful of excellent pubs and unique, local stores, as well as the Lords Meadow Industrial Estate and the local Rugby and Football Clubs. Just outside Crediton is the pleasant Shobrooke Park and Downes Crediton Golf Club.
There is evidence that Crediton has been settled since around 680 when Saint Boniface, the patron saint of the Netherlands and Germany, was born there. Crediton is notable for being the first bishopric in Devon before the seat was moved to the larger Exeter in 1050.
The Crediton Parish Church now stands on the site of the historic cathedral before the transfer of the seat to Exeter. This red brick church dates back - in part - to the 15th century, and there are a few notable, modern additions including The War Memorial Organ which was restored as recently as 2001.
Crediton continued to grow, finding more prominence in the local area when the wool trade peaked in the 16th century. Agriculture has continued to be important to Crediton, and since the early 20th century dairy has been important to the area.
Due to the town’s extensive history there are a few interesting landmarks worth visiting while you’re in Crediton. Downes House is probably the most famous of these landmarks. It was first built around 1692 but was extensively remodelled sometime in the 18th century. It is now a Grade-II listed building and is open to the public on select days of the year at a cost of £7.50 for adults or £3.75 for children.
