Wetherby is a town just 25 minutes’ drive from Leeds. It lies along the bank of the River Wharfe and is known for its beautiful flowers. The town has won numerous national and international awards for its floral displays, including the European Entente Florale Gold award in 1999 and the gold award in the International Communities in Bloom Competition in 2005. 

The Tourist Information Office offers guides for walking trails, so you can explore the history of Wetherby and see key features of the town at your own pace. These self-guided trails include the Historical Town Trail, Blue Plaque Trail, and Floral Town Trail (which you can take during the summer to see the town’s flowers). 

Wetherby is a small town that is full of history. The original Wetherby bridge was built in 1233, and is still part of the bridge standing today. It was widened in 1773 and then again in 1826, and you can still see the original from the riverside walkway underneath. Construction on the Town Hall began in 1845, and the walkway around it hosts the town market every Thursday. There’s even a genuine blue police box from the 1950s outside the police station. The Wetherby War Memorial was unveiled in April 1922 and was dedicated to the 71 men from Wetherby who were killed in the First World War.

As you cross into Wetherby, you’ll go across Wetherby Bridge. It was originally built in 1233 and can still be seen today. It was widened in 1773 and 1826, but you can still see the original underneath. If you’re looking for something a little more modern, the Wetherby Racecourse is a 5-minute away, and you can bring kids aged 17 and under for free. 

For self-guided exploration, you can pick up one of three guides for walking trails around the town. The Historical Town Trail will take you around the centre of town and direct you to several places of historical interest. The Blue Plaque Trail takes you around 18 interesting features of Wetherby, and can be combined with the Historical Town Trail. The beautiful Harewood House is only 15 minutes’ drive from Wetherby. There, you can explore the historic building and grounds used to film the TV series Victoria and the 2019 Downton Abbey movie. This 18th-century house sits on 100 acres of gardens, and offers a rare bird garden, farm experience, and contemporary art.

What are the best things to do in Wetherby?

There are several walking trails around areas of historical significance, such as the Wetherby Bridge and the war memorial. In the summer, one of these trails will show you where to see the best flowers in the city. You can also take a quick drive out to the racecourse to watch the races. The dress code is relatively relaxed, so smart-casual is all you need. On Sunday afternoons in the summer, the Wetherby Silver Band and other bands will perform in the bandstand below the bridge. 

What is Harewood House?

Harewood House is a famous 18th century home used to film the TV series Victoria, as well as the 2019 Downton Abbey film. It has over 100 acres of gardens to explore, as well as the extensive home itself and art collections. It is located just 15 minutes’ drive from Wetherby. 

When are the Wetherby markets?

Each Thursday, there is a market at the Town Hall. There, you’ll find fresh produce, plants, clothing, books, jewellery, stationery, and regular household goods. The farmer’s market takes place on the second Sunday of each month from 9am to 1pm, and you’ll find all kinds of fresh produce, preserves and jams, plants, chocolates and sweets, and even gluten-free products.
