St Leonard's Tower dates back to between 1077 and 1108, and is the only remaining part of a castle that was originally built there. No one is sure who built the castle, but one popular theory is that it was Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, who also founded St Mary’s Abbey. He famously led the Dam Busters raid in 1943, which used bouncing bombs to destroy two major dams and cause extensive flooding across the Ruhr area of Germany. He completed over 170 missions and was awarded a Victoria Cross before being killed in action in 1944.
