Powis Castle was built around 1200 and has been the home of the Herbert family who have lived in the castle since the 1570s. Within the Castle, you’ll find the Clive Museum which has one of the UK’s most significant collections of Indian objects. The castle is surrounded by extensive gardens, and there’s also a café, a coffee shop, and a general shop. 

The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway opened in 1903 as a link between Welshpool and the community of Llanfair Caereinion. Today, it’s now a popular tourist attraction where you can enjoy the peace of the countryside from a steam-powered locomotive. Most of the carriages are from Hungary and Austria and have an enclosed seating area with an open balcony. During September, there are one-hour steam train round trips from Llanfair Caereinion to Castle Caereinion which cost £12 for adults, £5 for children, and £29 for a family of four.

Are there any listed buildings in Welshpool? 

St Mary's Church is a Grade I listed building. The original church was built in around 1250, but only the remains of the lower courses of the tower remain today. The current building dates back to 1871 when it was restored and largely rebuilt by George Edmund Street, who famously designed the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand in London.
