Welshpool is a small town of around 6,000 people located about 30 minutes’ drive from Shrewsbury. It is home to the Smithfield Livestock Market, the largest one-day sheep market in Europe, and you’ll find a general market open on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday in the Market Village in the town hall.
Within the town, you’ll find the historic 13th-century Powis Castle and Gardens and the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway where you can enjoy the countryside from steam-powered locomotives. The town has clubs like the Young Farmers' club, Scouts, Air Cadets, Army Cadets, the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust, and riding and fishing clubs. You’ll also find places to play golf, football, rugby, cricket, and bowling. There are walking and cycling paths along the Montgomery Canal, and you can take boat trips along the canal between Easter and September.

Powis Castle was built around 1200 and has been the home of the Herbert family who have lived in the castle since the 1570s. Within the Castle, you’ll find the Clive Museum which has one of the UK’s most significant collections of Indian objects. The castle is surrounded by extensive gardens, and there’s also a café, a coffee shop, and a general shop.
The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway opened in 1903 as a link between Welshpool and the community of Llanfair Caereinion. Today, it’s now a popular tourist attraction where you can enjoy the peace of the countryside from a steam-powered locomotive. Most of the carriages are from Hungary and Austria and have an enclosed seating area with an open balcony. During September, there are one-hour steam train round trips from Llanfair Caereinion to Castle Caereinion which cost £12 for adults, £5 for children, and £29 for a family of four.
