Local Attractions
Morpeth is thought to date all the way back to the Neolithic period, and there are multiple historic buildings in the town. Morpeth Castle dates back to the 11th century, and is a Grade I listed building. It was completely refurbished in 1990 by the Landmark trust, and you can even rent the gatehouse as holiday accommodation.
Morpeth Chantry, another Grade I listed building, was built in 1296 to serve as a chapel and toll house. Now, it is occupied by the Tourist Information Office, the Northern Poetry Library, and the Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum.
St Mary's Church dates back to as early as the 12 century, and was used as the main church in Morpeth until the 1840’s, when it was replaced by St James’s Church. St Mary's is home to the grave of Emily Davison, an English suffragette who fought for women’s right to vote in the early 20th century.
