Garstang is a small town which is home to around 5,000 residents, and is located about 20 minutes’ drive north of Preston. It is known for being the Fair Trade Town in the world, after the campaign was first launched here by Bruce Crowther and the Garstang Oxfam Group in 2001.
Each year, Garstang hosts the Garstang Show. This is the leading one-day agriculture and horticulture show in the North West of England. Each year, it sees around 15,000 visitors, and has been held for over 200 years. The show has a circus, and Cumbrian Axemen, and also has competitions for horses, sheep, cattle, horticulture, goats, and farm dogs.
Garstang also hosts the annual Garstang Arts and Music Festival, which has run for 25 years and is held every August. The festival runs over 10 days and has live outdoor concerts, street entertainers, dances, jazz bands, folk music, art exhibitions and a variety of workshops. Local shops also put artwork in their windows to create an ‘art walk’. Since 2011, there has even been a hugely popular Town Crier competition.
