Penarth is a coastal town located around 6.5km from Cardiff. It is popular with tourists and visitors who come to spend a day on the beach or admire the historic Edwardian and Victorian architecture throughout the town centre.
The town is located within the Vale of Glamorgan, a county borough whose largest town is Barry. Its proximity to Cardiff also makes it a popular commuter town for those who work in the city. Penarth also has a high number of retirees, with over 25% of the town’s residents being retired people.
The current population of the town is around 30,000. There are also a number of bars and restaurants in the town centre if you’re visiting Penarth and looking for an evening meal. You’ll also find a number of cafes and a couple of stores close to the pier.
Penarth is easily accessible from Cardiff and other parts of the country by train or bus, with connections running several times a day. A pedestrian and cycle bridge also links the capital of Wales and Penarth.
The Penarth Pier and Pavilion was refurbished as recently as 2013, but retains its original 1929 art deco style. It now houses a cinema, cafe and restaurant, and also has space for live music events and other exhibitions. Penarth Pier and Pavilion is located right on the sea, so you can enjoy all of this with an ocean view.
Penarth Pavilion is also run by a not-for-profit and is open 7 days a week. Current hours are 9:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Thursday, 9:30am to 9:00pm Friday and Saturday, and 9:30am to 6:00pm Sunday. Fishing is allowed off the pier at certain times of the year. You don’t need a permit, and there is no cost.
If you’ve visited Penarth Pier and Pavilion, stop in at the nearby Italian Gardens and Windsor Gardens. They are both beautiful places to enjoy a picnic or stroll on a sunny day. The other popular outdoor attraction in Penarth is the Cosmeston Lakes Country Park and Medieval Village.
This reconstructed medieval village is popular with families and has over 100 hectares of land with stunning wetlands. The reconstructed medieval village is open 7 days a week and is also wheelchair friendly. Facilities at Cosmeston Lakes Country Park include a cafe and public toilets. Dogs are also allowed but should be kept on a lead.
Another thing Penarth is famous for are the unique cliffs the town sits atop. The cliffs include pink alabaster - the outcrop here is the largest naturally occurring outcrop of pink alabaster in the world. The rest of the cliffs are made of limestone and alabaster, which gives them a unique appearance.
