Okehampton is a cute old-fashioned market town which is snuggly set in the foothills of Northern Dartmoor, in West Devon in the county of Devon. It sits almost centrally between Exeter, Plymouth and Barnstaple.
The Saxons founded Okehampton and the earliest record of the settlement was in 980AD, apparently it was a place where slaves were able to be freed at the crossroads. Similar to the majority of towns within the West Country, Okehampton flourished on the medieval wool trade. There are prominent buildings in the town, these are: the 15th century chapel of St. James and Okehampton Castle, which was built by the Norman Sheriff of Devon Baldwin FitzGilbert between 1068 and 1086.
The Courtenay family remodelled Okehampton Castle, until King Henry VIII confiscated the lands and had Henry Courtenay executed for treason in 1539. The castle is now owned by English Heritage and is a popular tourist destination.
Today, Okehampton is renowned as one of the best walking centres of Devon, with excellent entry to Dartmoor from the town, or by way of the surrounding villages like Belstone.
