Derry, also known as Londonderry, is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland. The city is thought to date back to the 6th century when a monastery was founded there, however, archaeological evidence has been found that pre-dates this.
Derry is home to around 85,000 people and is the only remaining completely walled city in Ireland. The walls around the city were built between 1616 and 1619 as a defence against England and Scotland and are still intact to this day. The city is known as The Maiden City, since the walls have never been breached, not even during the Siege of Derry in 1689 which lasted 105 days.
Seamus Heaney, the Irish poet who received the 1995 Nobel Prize in Literature, attended St Columb's College in Derry. One of his most famous poems, “Mid-Term Break", is written about his brother’s death which happened while he was studying in Derry.

The Derry Walls were built over four years, with construction finishing in 1619. You can actually walk around the entire length of the walls, which are about a mile in circumference. There are seven gates in total, four of which were built when the wall was first constructed, and three were later added. There are 22 cannons along the walls and 2 which are displayed at Brook Hall. The Siege Museum lies nearby and tells the tale of the Siege of Derry and how it earned the name “The Maiden City”.
The Peace Bridge is a uniquely modern bridge across the River Foyle. It was built in 2011 and features a unique curving shape, supposed to symbolise peace, hence the name. It is for cycling and walking only, so you can enjoy a peaceful stroll over the river and take in the view of the city.
Derry is also home to St Columb's Cathedral, the first Protestant cathedral constructed anywhere in the world after the Reformation in 1633. It was also the first non-Roman Catholic cathedral to be built in Western Europe.
