The original Whiteleys department store was created by William Whiteley in the 19^th century, and today’s shopping centre retains several Grade II listed architectural features alongside its many restaurants and clothing stores. William Whiteley also left a more sensational legacy: in 1907, a man claiming to be Whiteley’s illegitimate son murdered him on the shop floor. However, the Whiteleys store persisted, and in 1912 it was opened by the Mayor of London himself.
