Dumfries is a market town in the Dumfries and Galloway council area of Scotland. It lies beside the River Nith and is full of history. Many notable people have connections to Dumfries, including Benjamin Bell (the first Scottish scientific surgeon), William Charles Wells (one of the earliest scientists to discuss the theory of natural selection, even before Charles Darwin), James Matthew Barrie (the author of Peter Pan), Robert Burns (renowned Scottish poet), and the artist Calvin Harris. 

The Devorgilla Bridge in Dumfries is thought to be one of the oldest bridges in Scotland. There is thought to have been a wooden bridge built here in the 1260s, but nothing of this has survived. The construction on the stone bridge began in 1430, and was partially destroyed by a floor in around 1620. 

The Dumfries campus of the University of the West of Scotland is about 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of town. You’ll also find a statue of the famous poet, Robert Burns, in the town centre. The Robert Burns House, where Robert Burns actually used to live, is now a museum, and you can visit and see it for free. The Gracefield Arts Centre is home to over 600 pieces of art by Scottish artists, many of whom have connections to Dumfries. 

The town hosts a monthly market, and each year at the end of January it hosts the Big Burns Supper Festival. This runs for 11 days at the end of January as a celebration of Burns Night, a day dedicated to the poet Robert Burns. It has live music and performances, comedy events, and even a disco. All up, there are over 200 events happening over the 11 days.

Dumfries parking is operated through a disc parking scheme. In some areas, you can park for free for a limited time by displaying one of these discs. The maximum stay time will be displayed on street signs or in the car park, and you must display the parking disc to show your arrival time. 

Discs can be purchased from some local shops, as well as council service centres. In Dumfries, these can be found at Ewart Library, Georgetown, Lochthorn, and at the North West Community Campus Library. 

In some parts of the town, the council operates residents parking schemes, whereby you can apply for a permit and park without a time limit. These permits are free, and last a year from when they are issued. When you apply, you’ll need a copy of your driver’s licence, a copy of your vehicle registration document or insurance certificate, and proof of your address. 

If you are disabled and have a blue badge, you can apply to have a spot close to your home reserved for your use. You’ll need to provide information about the disabled person (whether that’s yourself or someone else), details of the disabled parking permit, and the details of the vehicle which you will be parking in that space. You must still display your blue badge when using this space. 

If you are parked illegally, you will be issued a parking fine of £74. If you settle the fine within 7 days, you will only have to pay £37. You must pay or appeal the fine within 21 days, or risk further legal action.

The Devorgilla Bridge in Dumfries is thought to be one of the oldest bridges in Scotland. A wooden bridge was originally built in 1260, and was completely replaced by a stone bridge in 1430, which was partially destroyed by a flood in around 1620. There is an inscription on the bridge which reads 1610, but it is thought to be from a brick taken from a local building in the 1800s. The bridge connects to the Old Bridge Road House Museum.
