Hemel Hempstead Hospital is located on Hillfield Road near the Marlowes Shopping Centre in Hemel Hempstead. It was first established in 1827 when a row of cottages were converted to create an infirmary, and now sees over 100,000 patients every year. It has an urgent treatment centre open every day from 8am to 10pm, and offers 12 stroke rehabilitation beds. The hospital used to have an Accident & Emergency department, however, this was removed in 2006, and as a result, there are large parts of the hospital which are currently not actively being used to provide healthcare.
The hospital offers free Wi-Fi for patients and visitors, as well as a radio service which is broadcast from Watford Hospital. Hemel Hempstead Hospital also offers InfoPoint help points, which are telephone kiosks that patients and visitors can use to call for a taxi, find travel informational, general health advice, and contact the Trust switchboard and Patient Advice and Liaison (PALS), all for free.
The hospital also offers spiritual and pastoral care options to its patients. They currently employ a full-time Christian Chaplain and a part-time Roman Catholic Lay Chaplain, and are in the process of finding other faith leaders in order to support people from more faiths. The hospital also has its own chapel which hosts Roman Catholic Mass every Tuesday at 1pm.
