The Ely Cathedral is located right in the centre of Ely, a cathedral city home to around 20,000 people in Cambridgeshire. The current cathedral dates back to the 11th century, and it was given cathedral status in 1109. The Ely monastery was dissolved in 1539, and the shrine of St Etheldreda was destroyed in 1541, although there is a marker in the cathedral to show where it once stood. St Etheldreda founded a monastery in 673 on the site where Ely Cathedral stands today.
The cathedral is 161 metres long and covers 46,000 square feet. The West Tower stands 66 metres tall, and there are 288 steps to the top. Every year, around 250,000 people visit the Ely Cathedral. There are guides available from Thursday to Saturday, 11am to midday, and then also from 1:30pm to 2:30pm if you have questions about the cathedral and its history. There is also an on-site café and a restaurant just 2 minutes’ walk across the East Lawn from the South Door exit. Plus, dogs are welcome as long as they’re well behaved and kept on a leash for the duration of your stay.
