Opened in 1820, Essex County Hospital has been part of the Colchester community for generations. It is a treasure trove of local history, as shown by the initials that can be seen in the bricks from the former children’s ward that were used to build the new radiotherapy department in 1964. Though the original site closed in 2018, the University of Essex history department maintain a website dedicated to preserving the stories of the hospital’s past.
