Mermaid Quay is a waterfront shopping centre located in Cardiff, Wales. It offers more than 30 restaurants, bars and cafés, with cuisine from across the globe. The shopping centre is built on what used to be known as Tiger bay, which played a large role in the export of coal. But, after the Second World War, and the global decline in demand for coal, exports stopped in the 1960s and the area became bleak and run down. Mermaid Quay was built in 1999, and lots of the old buildings are still in use today. The Pilotage Office, which used to be an administrative building for river pilots is now occupied by Bull’s Restaurant. The shed where people would queue for tickets to America is now Coffi Co. 

Mermaid Quay is about 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Cardiff, and is surrounded by spots like the Cardiff Bay Wetlands Reserve and Cardiff Docks. The Aquabus service will take you around the Bay and up the River Taff to the city centre all the way to Cardiff Castle.

There are plenty of options for parking at Mermaid Quay. The shopping centre has its own 380-space, two-level visitor car park next door. It uses a ticketless parking system whereby it automatically recognises the registration numbers of cars as they enter. When you’re heading back to your vehicle after a day of shopping, just enter your registration number at a pay station. It will automatically charge you for the number of hours you have been in the park. When you go to leave, the barriers at the exit will rise automatically. If you have not paid, you will not be able to exit the car park. The cost of Mermaid Quay parking is as follows:

You’re just outside of central Cardiff here, so iconic locations like Cardiff Castle are just a few minutes’ drive away. The castle dates all the way back to 50 AD, when it was first established by the Romans. You can still see the remains of the Roman wall to this day. The castle was mainly built from 1866, and was eventually gifted to the city of Cardiff. It was home to the National College of Music and Drama for 25 years, and since 1974 it is one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions. 

At Mermaid Quay, you can visit the Roald Dahl Plass, a public plaza named after the Cardiff-born author. The plaza is popular for hosting open-air concerts, and it is home to the Wales Millennium Centre, a vibrant performing arts centre. The centre attracts over 1.6 million people each year, and hosts everything including opera, musicals, and ballet. 

The Glee comedy club hosts a huge variety of fantastic comedic talent from the UK and around the world. Friday and Saturday comedy nights are a local favourite, but you can enjoy a laugh all week around. The club even hosts bands from time to time.

By Train: The Cardiff Bay train station is just over 5 minutes’ walk from the shopping centre and services the Transport for Wales line. 

By Bus: Several bus lines run past Mermaid Quay, including 6, 8, 89A, 89B, 304, and X8. 

By Car: If you’re coming from outside of Cardiff, you can reach Mermaid Quay by taking the M4 motorway and following the signs to Cardiff Bay or Mermaid Quay. 

By Ferry: The Aquabus service runs from Mermaid Quay to Cardiff Castle every hour at half past the hour, and from Penarth to Mermaid Quay every hour at twenty past the hour.
