It is overseen by the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and in the UK is the biggest general hospital.
The unique and distinct yellow tower block that rises high and shadows over the skyline of Belfast, is the third tallest building in Northern Ireland. The Belfast city hospitals deliver a range of community and regional acute and major services. The hospital specialises in transplants, renal medicine and a widespread variety of cancer services within the Cancer Centre.
In 1841, the current hospital was a workhouse infirmary, planned for the use of the poorest of the poor who couldn’t gain access to healthcare that was supplied by the government at the time. It quickly became hard to distinguish the sick from the impoverished and the infirmary grew to have over 600 beds. In 1869 there were 4,252 patients in the infirmary.
